Description
Treaty Acknowledgement
The Riversdale Community Fridge respectfully acknowledges Treaty 6 territory—the ancestral and traditional lands of the Cree, Dene, Blackfoot, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, as well as the Métis. We recognize the enduring presence of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples whose footsteps have shaped these lands for generations. We honor the Traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders, past and present. This acknowledgment is an expression of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or visit.
About Us
The Riversdale Community Fridge was founded in January 2021 by a dedicated group of community members committed to addressing food insecurity and poverty in Saskatoon. We draw inspiration from existing groups and aim to inspire others to initiate their own mutual aid efforts.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide access to nutritious food options, alleviate hunger, and combat food waste through partnerships with local businesses and community organizations.
Vision Statement
We envision a city where food insecurity and hunger are effectively countered, motivating others to join in this important cause.
Our Priorities
Food Distribution
We collaborate with local donors and partners to ensure a consistent supply of high-quality food for the community.
Advocacy for Change
We advocate for sustainable, long-term solutions to poverty, food insecurity, and food waste. We encourage community members to engage in advocacy efforts on behalf of marginalized and vulnerable populations.
Mobilization
We create opportunities for community members to volunteer, participate, and advocate alongside us, fostering strong collaborative relationships.
Our Core Values
Rights-based
We affirm that access to food is a fundamental human right, essential for a dignified quality of life free from hunger and poverty.
Solidarity
We operate under the principle of "solidarity, not charity," treating everyone with respect and dignity. We align ourselves with communities disproportionately affected by systemic injustices.
Mutual Aid
We believe in mutual aid as a means to address both immediate and long-term challenges of hunger, poverty, and social justice. By nurturing community relationships and pooling resources, we empower individuals and communities from the grassroots level.
